13th Century sapphire & gold ring

Medieval, stirrup-shaped gold finger ring set with single cabachon sapphire.

The hoop, triangular in section is decorated over its two outer sides with a series of simple double punches, spaced evenly between these punches are five, four petalled flowers. The decoration is evident along the entire circumference of the hoop up to the bezel. The bezel, also triangular in section is undecorated except for a single punch either side and holds a single blue cabochon sapphire. These type rings have been discovered in the tombs of Bishops suggesting that it may have once been owned by such a person.
