Medieval 'Cramp' Ring

Gold finger ring probably dating to the 13th or 14th Century. The ring is inscribed with the words '+ GOD HELP AMEN' on each of the two sides of the outer bevel.

During this religious age, rings were considered to have mystical/magical properties and are known to have been worn to cure ailments such as epilepsy and paralysis. Rings used for this purpose were sometimes known as ‘cramp’ rings.

Declared under the Treasure Act.
